SPECIAL SPORTING ISSUE

This year has been an outstanding sporting year for Tennant Creek.  The home teams took off the Territory Premierships in Cricket, Basketball and Baseball.  This special issue of the Clarion is to mark this success and also to mark the occasion of the visit of the Goodwood Indians Baseball Team.
At Easter Tennant Creek won the Calder Shield in the Northern Territory Cricket Carnival held at Tennant Creek, defeating Katherine and Darwin.
At the same time in Darwin, in taking out the Basketball Premiership, Tennant won all games and defeated Gove in the final.
Over Gold Rush Weekend at Katherine, the Tennant Baseball side took out the Kriewaldt Shield, defeating Alice Springs 6-0, Darwin 7-5, Mount Isa 15-6 and Katherine 10-5.
Also in January, the Tennant Ladies Softball team won all five games in the D. grade division in the Country Softball Carnival in Adelaide.
Other notable events have been the Territory Golf Championships at which Tennant Creek golfers held their own.  In pistol shooting, soccer, Australian Rules and Rugby League, tennis and swimming there were good performances.  A Kouchakdjian and J. Tuxworth competed in the National Pistol Shooting Championships in Perth at Easter.
In what has been an outstanding year of sport it is fitting that the Tennant Creek Baseball Association has arranged a visit of the Goodwood Indians Baseball Team from Adelaide to play against a Tennant Creek Representative side on this Saturday and Sunday.
Other events during the weekend are the World Series Baseball films at the Sporting Club on Friday night at 8.00 p.m.  These are the 1971 World Series games, Pittsburg Pirates versus the Baltimore Orioles, and the 1972 World Series, the Cincinatti Reds versus the Oakland A’s.
On Saturday night the Softball Presentation Ball will be held at the Sportsman’s Club.
Also on the weekend the South Australian Theatre Company present a Theatre-Go-Round.  This comprises a Theatre Workshop at the Area School at 9 a.m. and an evening performance at the C.W.A. Hall at 8.00 p.m.
For those interested in baseball games the following  run down on the opposing teams players is given.
Goodwood Indians:
Phillip McCloud
An experienced youngster.  Phil is a very complete baseballer for his 18 years.  An excellent outfielder and promising pitcher.
Fred Faulkner
An exciting player capable of performing the impossible in the outfield.  Another youngster with a ton of ability.
Mark Williams
Mark needs no introductions.  A product of Tennant Creek’s local ball.  Mark is the most brilliant and exciting outfielder to hit the Goodwood Club for many years.  A little improvement in his batting and Mark will find a regular berth in the “A” grade side.
